Day 1 - Jesus as Friend

Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. John 15:15

What is a friend? A friend is someone who really likes you a lot and enjoys spending time with you. They listen, they talk and they care about you. You enjoy doing things together, there is a mutual understanding of each other and usually you will have similar interests. A friend will not abandon you when things get tough, but they will be there to support you and will often offer to help you with whatever it is you need. I am almost sure that as you are reading this, you have a friend or two that closely fits this description of a friend.

When thinking about your friend in light of this description, replace the friend you pictured that fits that description, to God Himself, or Jesus Christ. It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? Most often, we think of God as Someone we pray to and hope hears our prayers, or we think of Him as Someone that is far away in the heavens too far beyond our reach. Some people may even think that it’s lowering God to our level to think of Him as being anyone’s friend. Yet Scripture indicates (see opening verse) that Jesus considered His disciples as friends. And not only did He have friends in the New Testament, but in the Old Testament as well.

And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. Exodus 33:11

Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? 2 Chronicles 20:7

God treated Moses as a friend and also considered Abraham His friend. You might notice if you read about God’s relationship to these two men, that these were no ordinary friendships. These friendships were based on trust, and so God revealed things to Moses and Abraham that He revealed to no one else around them.

For me, friendship was one of the first ways that God revealed Himself to me; anything else would have scared me away. At the time, I wasn’t really living for Him, and I had a wrong concept of Who He is, thinking of Him only as a judge who had it in for me for the sinful life I had been leading. Jesus approached me by speaking to me in His still small voice and I had never known such peace before. There was no pressure and no condemnation, even though I still had not given Him my heart and life. He knew there was much work to be done in my heart before I would give my life to Him. True friends are like that – they accept you as you are and they don’t try to change you. They just want what’s best for you. This is how Jesus treated me. Finally, one day I made a decision to hand over my sins and Jesus gave me a cleansed heart. I could start my life over, since He wiped my slate clean. No one could ask for a better Friend than that.
