Never Alone
Loneliness is a human condition that hits almost everyone from all walks of life and happens for various reasons. It can be very debilitating and can come upon us suddenly and without warning. People handle it in different ways. Some people who find themselves alone become social butterflies and keep a full schedule to try to escape the lonely nights and weekends. Others bury themselves in their work or hobbies. Some people drink too much to try to numb the pain. At the heart of loneliness is often a feeling of inadequacy and a great need to be validated and accepted. Everyone wants to feel that they are special and they matter to at least one person in this world. Studies have shown that people who are fulfilled in their relationships live longer, healthier and happier lives. Some people have pets to take the edge off of loneliness. Caring for and thinking of someone other than ourselves is a great benefit for us both physically and psychologically.

Our Creator knew that when He created man it was not good for him to be alone, so He created women to complement him and provide companionship (Genesis 2:18). However, not everyone is married and many people suffer through separation and divorce. Some are widowed. Even some who are married are lonely for one reason or another. We may well wonder how God could concede that it is not good for us to be alone, yet there are so many people today who are alone.

As a single for many years, I used to wonder the very same thing. I grew up believing in God and I attended church regularly. I even gave my heart and life to Jesus as a teenager and got to know Him as my personal Savior. Yet still I felt lonely especially during my twenties when so many of my friends got married and often moved away. I tried to handle loneliness by keeping a very busy schedule. But, I would still go home and be alone with my thoughts. I'd eat by myself, watch TV, or read and often cry myself to sleep at night. It wasn't until after I got married (in my mid thirties) that I was able to look back on those years and begin to understand why God had allowed me to go through so much loneliness. I realized that it was in my loneliest times that God had been there for me. When I was sick and afraid and no one was there, I would pray and ask God to be with me. Many times He gave me the peace and rest I needed, much more than any medicated drugs could do.

I did a lot of driving on the weekends and would drive to a small town about three hours from the city to visit my parents. It was at these times I'd pray and talk to God. Twice I got stranded on the highway in the middle of winter. Both times I prayed and each time I was rescued and able to complete my journey. I really learned to listen to God, too. On one of the trips shortly before I got married (but didn't yet realize to whom and how soon), I was getting really tired of driving and doing everything by myself. I believe God assured me that the time would be soon for my marriage, but He explained that not everything was in place yet. After sharing this later with my husband, we both knew that the timing had to do with him becoming a Christian. I had prayed and asked God to provide me with a loving Christian husband, and although my husband-to-be was my best friend, he had not yet made a firm commitment in his faith. After he became a Christian, everything fell into place for us and we were married shortly after.

Through my loneliness I discovered that God can meet every need and accommodate every situation. Perhaps you too are at the stage where you are sick and tired of being lonely. Perhaps you believe in God, but you are unaware that He loves you and longs to fill the emptiness with Himself.

There may be many different religions out there and even gods who claim some fame, but the God of the Bible is a very personal God who knows even the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30-31). He is a Person who loved us so much that He was willing to lay down His life and die for us so that we could be saved (John 15:31). Maybe you have been taught that unless you are good you can't know God and God will have nothing to do with you. But the truth is, Christ loved us and died for us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8).

No one has to travel through this life alone and lonely. Many people have found a true and lasting Friend in Jesus, for as the Scripture says, "there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24 KJV). He is just waiting to show you how valuable you are to Him, so treasured you are that He has promised, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 14:5b KJV). This moment can be the last moment you ever feel that incredible void. You may feel lonely at times, but in reality, with Jesus you will never be alone again.
